AARDVARK!!!

Good morning everyone… Late last night I saw my first Kalahari aardvark, it was great though I could only get a tail sticking out its hole!!! HaHa! Now I have to wait another 10 years to see the rest! It was a special moment, seeing its Noa’s favourite animal! The aardvark is nocturnal and is a solitary creature that feeds almost exclusively on ants and termites. Aardvark emerges from its burrow in the late afternoon or shortly after sunset, and forages over a considerable home range encompassing 10 to 30 km.

Good morning everyone… Saturday evening we had a black tie gala organised by the Captured Experiences team! It was the prize giving for the photographic competition, and i had to find a suite and bow-tie!!! Anyway it was a great evening and even with lions roaring in the background!!! Check out some photos of one of my friends, Hendri Venter. I left my camera at my tent to relax and enjoy the evening with friends!!!

R.I.P.

Good afternoon everyone…

Last week I told you about one of my favourite old males in the park called Murtu. After a gamedrive yesterday I found his remains, and i must admit, it was horrible to see him like this!

But it gives the younger males in the area chance to be king! I will definitely miss him! R.I.P!! I enclose a photo of him in his prime, the way i would like to remember him!!!

PS. Ill post some photos of Saturdays black tie event tommorrow!

The Return to the Kalahari 3D

Good afternoon everyone…

Me and Noa are just driving north of Brandvlei, going back to the kalahari, our home away from home. Tomorrow night we attend the prize giving dinner gala of the captured experience competition. I managed to borrow a suit with a bowtie from my dad and Noa has got a little black dress and a charlie. So we will look a little different then in our usual bush cloths which is shorts and a t-shirt with mostly holes in it. We will post some photos of the event on monday.

Enjoy ur weekend! Til monday

Take Away!

Good morning everyone… Spotted Hyena  has been vilified by many, in reality the spotted hyena is a very good hunter and they are incredibly interesting. One single hyena can chase and kill an animal that weighs three times as much as itself! The Hyena bite their prey in the legs, forcing it to lay down. Here the hyena hunted a young gemsbok, and devoured almost every little bit within 5 hours! He took the head back to its den after finishing the rest.

Flower Power!

Good morning everyone…  This old male is one of my favourite lions in the park! He moves around the Rooiputs area. His name is “Murtu” and in afrikaans it would be “Moertoe.” Everyone that has seen this lion knows why! Thats why i love this lion, he has a story to tell, battle scars, ripped eyelids, always full off scratches, but he is quiet the ladies man and will always be seen with a couple of lionesses. His coalition partner is called Mufasa and is probably one of the biggest males in the park at the moment. Around mating time Mufasa and him always have fights and things usually heats up! Unfortunately he is getting old and i don’t think he will see the end of the year, i have walked a long way with him over the last 5 years and will be sad to see him go! Today I share with you a king among the beautiful flowers (Cat’s tails & Devil’s thorn)!

Bastard!

Good morning everyone… What a name!!! It’s actually Kori Bustard (Ardeotis kori), and its one of the largest birds in the world. Males will weigh as much as 17 kg while the females weigh about half that. It is also the heaviest flying bird in the world! It is difficult for them to fly because of their size.

Scientists who have studied them see a very strange relationship between them and another bird known as a carmine bee eater. The bee eater will sit on the back of the kori’s to catch the bugs that the bustards stir up, and in return the bustards benefit because the bee eaters appear to be aware of predators sooner than the kori bustard.

The Great Itch!

Good morning everyone… Hope you had a great weekend. Im almost on my way back to my home away from home, to continue my kalahari project! On Saturday evening we have a black tie event in the Park, and i’ll try and be shaven and will have to find a suit somewhere! I think the last time i had a suit on was about a decade ago! About 300 guests will attend the Captured Experiences award ceremony and ill make sure that we take lots of pictures! This morning i am sharing a photo of one of Polentswa’s big pride males. Some prides have been known to use the same territory for decades, passing the area on between females. Lions proclaim their territory by roaring and by scent marking as can be seen here.

Spotted!!!

Good morning everyone…its Black & White Friday again! Im back on the leopards and are loving it! When older cubs start to get more independant, its so much fun to follow them and see what they are up to. This cub was photographed close to Houmoed, rolling and sleeping in the long grass, playing with his tail the whole time. At one year of age (like this one here), leopard young can probably fend for themselves, but remain with the mother for 18–24 months, but in the kalahari it is known that the time period is slightly less, 16-20 months.
