Good morning everyone, it’s getting hotter in the Kalahari and the thermometer almost reached 40 degrees Celsius yesterday! The lions at Kij Kij are still entertaining us almost every day!
They killed an eland last week and the hyenas were very annoying. When the lions had enough, they charged and killed one of them, played around with him and left him for the vultures.
A juvenile bateleur nibbled on the carcass for a while before the jackal took over. Enjoy and see you soon!

Gotta Pee!!!
Good evening everyone! Time in the kalahari is getting short for us and after more than 4 years here we are realizing what we soon have to leave behind! It’s going to be very hard driving out of this Park! A sad day indeed! But still, 70 fun-filled days to come!!! So, today we share with you some of the little creatures in this park that always makes us laugh! Enjoy and see you soon!
First Rains!
Good afternoon everyone, the first rains have arrived, mmmm and the smell was overwhelming! Its also getting hotter here in the Kalahari, the temperature reaching 36 degrees Celsius the last couple of days! The tent is a lot cooler since we got reflecting sheets that covers our tent, sponsored by Bushwakka in Worcester, which gives us a 7 degrees cooler tent!!!! Thank you, Jasper!!! Heeehah, bring on the summer! The eland are slowly disappearing, and the cats are more frequently seen in the riverbeds, also the cheetahs are back in the riverbeds, after a cold winter. We share with you today a family of jackals playing in the morning light. Enjoy and see you soon!
Bon appétit!!!
Good morning everyone, the eland are slowly disappearing into the dunes again, looks like they had enough of all the lions. Last week at Houmoed waterhole a single male lion caught 3 eland and devoured it over a period of 24 hours. Also, Luna was attacked, by what looks like lion, but she is walking ok, so hopefully no permanent damage. It is difficult for other predators drinking water when the lions just park off at all the waterholes waiting for the eland to come drink. Here, one of the southern males is pulling out the stomach of an eland it just caught, enjoy and see you soon.
King of the jungle!
Good morning everyone, the weather is slowly getting better, with yesterday a nice 33 degrees Celsius and last night 8 degrees. So it looks like the cold weather is something of the past – hopefully! Sightings have been quiet the last week, but the great thing about August is that it’s the windy month, so all the long grass of the rainy season is blowing away, so sightings are a lot easier. Also, the eland are increasing and slowly getting use to the cars, which makes photographing them a lot easier. We share with you today one of Polentswa’s big boys! Enjoy and see you soon.
Stalking doves.
Good morning everyone, it’s been a cold weekend out in the field again, but surprisingly lots of predators in the river valley. Probably because of the eland! We have seen 4 dead eland remains in the river the last 2 weeks, but mostly smaller eland, looks like they are the targets for the lion. The pride in the KijKij area is one of the bigger prides in the park (13) and with 6 young cubs, (5males and 1 female), there is always lots of activity, usually in the mornings, not the afternoons. On this particular day they chased doves all over the place! It’s fun to spend time with these lions, always entertaining and best of all they are very curious and love to bite our bull-bar and spare tyre on the back, always investigating! Enjoy and see you soon!
Kali is growing up!
Good morning everyone, Kali, Luna’s previous cub that survived, is growing up to be a beautiful leopard, she has dad’s (Oscar) lazy eyes and don’t mind the tourists. She settled in nicely on the border of her mother’s territory. Also the eland are increasing daily, We have seen groups up to 60 in the southern triangle. From big bulls to little calves. Hopefully they will stick around till the dry season. Enjoy and see you soon!
Kalahari Love!
Good morning everyone, the lion prides have slowly moved towards the dunes, because of the cold ( -9 degrees C. last week!) . It’s a little hotter in the dunes than in the river-valley % degrees C.)! Lion and cheetah sightings in the south is less than usual. But the wildcats are everywhere, I drive daily past about 10 or more. There is also regular sightings of caracal north of Leeudril. The eland populations are increasing, but still very skittish! Here is a photo taken at Melkvlei picnic site, this big pride of about 11 was taking over the picnic site and was jumping on the tables and chasing each other around the toilets. Lots of laughter to see these young lions performing. While the little ones were playing, mom and dad were working on the next generation! Enjoy and see you soon!
Luna, queen of the Kalahari Desert!
Good morning everyone, its getting cold here in the Kalahari, -9 degrees Celsius yesterday morning and today -8 degrees Celsius!!!!!! Brrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!! Anyway, the Landrover pipes froze this morning and the Landy overheated shortly after our game-drive began!!! After sitting in the sun for a while, off we were in pursuit of game! Luna, the female leopard we have been following the last 18 months is looking better than ever. Noa spotted her from about 400 meters in long grass! Impressive!!!! She is up the river towards Leeudril on a ridge and was lying in the sun, heating up from the cold.
Elanddrive!
Good morning everyone! The eland are back in the South African side of the Park in big groups. In the last year and a half we had no eland sightings, so this was quiete special! We saw them on the southern dune road around the Tierkop area. An interesting fact about Eland herds are that they are accompanied by a loud clicking sound that has been subject to considerable speculation. It is believed that the weight of the animal causes the two halves of its hooves to splay apart, and the clicking is the result of the hoof snapping together when the animal raises its leg. The sound carries some distance from a herd, and may be a form of communication. Enjoy and see you soon!
