Lions in the Mist!

Good morning everyone, its been cold the last few weeks and the temperature verrrrry low. The coldest morning this week was -6 Degrees! Brrrrrrrrrrrr! We were lucky to get some lions in the mist up in the Kij Kij area. A male and female that was mating strolled down the road and as soon as the sun was rising the mist disappeared! Mist is very rare in the kalahari and to find a cat in the mist is also something very special! Enjoy and see you soon!

Back in action!

Good afternoon everyone! We just arrived back in the Park and its raining cats and dogs! Luckily its not that cold, the cloud-cover heats things up a bit! After taking a few weeks off, and recharging, we are ready for some action!!  Hopefully, the last 6 months of our project will be very exciting and we will be working extremely hard! Hopefully we can find Luna and her new cubs soon!!!! We will keep you posted! We share with you today the young male at Rooiputs who was chasing slender mongoose in a little cliff-face a while ago!

Enjoy and see you soon!

Peekaboo!

Good morning everyone, been busy with photo-safaris again, but were back in action again! The kalahari is getting cold again and we had a -7 degrees up at Nossob and a -4 in Twee Rivieren last week! Brrrrrrrrr. The veld is alive with cheetahs at the moment, and also the young male leopard is very entertaining, we decided to call him Milo! Here is a cheetah peeking from behind his paw, enjoy and see you soon!

Stalking doves!

Good afternoon everyone, its been a busy week regarding cheetah’s, and also wildcats, every day we see around ten or more. The big male lions of the Rooiputs area are mating again, and we bumped into Luna close to Leeudril, looks like she is hiding in the dunes, the cubs should arrive any day now! The young male leopard we have been seen in the Rooiputs area is still in the area and he tried to stalk doves that was drinking water inside the dam, while balancing on the fibre-glass edge! He was very unstable and entertained us for quite a while! Enjoy and see you soon!

Leopard update!

Good day everyone, were back in Twee Rivieren after 3 Photographic Safaris, and we will be posting regularly for the next 3 weeks. It has been a good month for game-viewing with sightings of basically everything you find in the park. It’s cooling down a lot and the average temperature in the mornings in the river valley is 5-7 degrees. We found two new leopards in the south, just show you how elusive they can be! Both young, around 12 months old. A male in the Rooiputs area and a female north of Auchterlonie picnic site. We share with you a couple of photos of the last month. Enjoy and see you soon!

Evening snack!

Good afternoon everyone, the park is very quiet at the moment and the grass are very looooooong! So good sightings has been rare! At night the usuals are out and about, like the owls feeding on insects in the road and the bat-eared foxes loving all the termites. We have been busy with another safari, but are back in action. The lions and cheetah has been seen a lot in the Kij Kij area, also good hyena action at the Kamfersboom waterhole. Today we have the Spotted Eagle-Owl snacking on an insect, enjoy and see you soon!

Beach Boy cubs!

Good morning everyone, its been a very quiet week/month in the park, haven’t downloaded any pictures this month at all! Hopefully things will change soon, they normally do, you’ll get a quiet month and then within a day or two, a person gets incredible sightings everywhere! There is a female part of the southern pride that gave birth to two cubs a few weeks ago, and they are very entertaining! Just like kids, walking is not an option! Moms legs and steps is way to long for their little legs, so they keep on slacking behind and refuse to walk any further! After a while mom returns and spend the rest of the time under a bush while they suckle! By the way, this is the first offspring of one of the Beach boys! Still no leopards!! Enjoy and see you soon!

Garden of Eden!

Good morning everyone, the kalahari is still full of flowers but the grass is gradually turning more yellow. There has been a lot of cheetah and lion-sightings in the south but unfortunately no leopards. Hopefully they show themselves soon. The grass is very tall in the north and make sightings difficult. Today I share with you a little Scaly-feathered Finch among beautiful flowers. The Scaly-feathered Finch is a Southern African bird that belongs to the Ploceidae bird family group which includes birds such as Weavers, Queleas, Windowbirds. The Scaly-feathered Finch is known in Afrikaans as Baardmannetjie.

This bird forages for food on the ground. This bird eats insects such as butterflies, bees, wasps, locusts and ants. These invertebrates are usually hawked aerially, killed and then eaten.

Enjoy and see you soon.

PS, there was a cancellation on the  18-22 June Photographic safari, so anyone interested, let me know.

Green Kalahari!

Good morning everyone, i have been on photographic safaris the last two weeks, so I’ve been offline for a while. Good to be back! The northern areas are greener than ever and the grass is very high. The Mata Mata area is the best for wildlife at the moment, with the riverbed looking like a golf-course. Cheetahs are frequent, and the two pride-males of the Dalkeith area is looking old, maybe within the next 6 months there will be new kings in that area. Marabou & white storks was seen in the northern parts of the park. Herewith a photo of the green riverbed close to Mata Mata. Enjoy & see you soon.

Weekly update!

Good morning everyone! The  kalahari has been quiet this week due to lots of rain. Birds have been active and the Southern Masked Weaver or African Masked Weaver  (Ploceus velatus) are everywhere. The Wattled starlings are bathing in the puddles of water and the weavers are building nests to impress the ladies!

Males have several female partners, and build a succession of nests, typically 25 each season. The nests, like those of other weavers, are woven from reed, palm or grass. A female will line a selected nest with soft grass and feathers. The nest is built in a tree, often over water, but sometimes in suburbia. This weaver also nests in reeds. Eggs of the wrong colouration are ejected by the nest owners.

The lions, leopards and cheetah’s has been quiet this week, so hopefully now that is getting hotter, they will make there appearance again!
