Well done Colin! Send me your details, and a book will be on its way soon! Yesterday’s winner was Dan de Vos! It was a Lanner Falcon and Burchell’s sandgrouse!
I share with you today the 2 big beach boys of the south!
Good afternoon everyone, we have come to the end of the bird quiz, today is the last one! Well done Khaki!!!!! Yesterday’s bird was a Sociable weaver chick that fell out of the nest, it was quite a sad story: While the mother was still feeding the chick on the ground, the other sociable weavers picked it and killed it eventually, to prevent predators, like snakes, hearing it’s chirps! Here is the last quiz, I want BOTH birds! Good luck and see you tomorrow!
Good morning everyone, well done Colin, yesterdays quiz was indeed a Saddle-billed Stork (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis). This one was seen at Kwang waterhole and was a juvenile. Juveniles are browner grey in plumage. After a big rainy season they sometimes will be seen way out of their normal habitat, like the kalahari!
Today’s quiz is a thriller! Sorry! Lets see how you do? Good luck and see you tomorrow for the last quiz! Who is it going to be? Colin or Andrew? Im taking bets by the way!
Good morning everyone! Ok Colin Wylie and Andrew Stegman are tied at 5 all with 3 quiz’s to go! So lets see what happens over the next 3 days!!! Exciting stuff!!!! Im throwing another spanner in the works and making it a bit more difficult for the last 3 days!
Andrew was correct yesterday, it was a Brown Snake Eagle (Circaetus cinereus). Here goes today’s quiz, good luck and see you tomorrow! This bird was snapped at Kwang waterhole a couple of years ago!
Good afternoon everyone! Well done Dan de Vos! Friday’s quiz was a juvenile Gabar Goshawk (Micronisus gabar). It was actually running after striped field-mouse, but missed it! The cere and the legs are yellow in immature gabar goshawks and the plumage is generally browner, with the pale form having less tidy barring on the chest than the adult.
Here is today’s quiz, good luck and see you tomorrow!!
Good afternoon everyone… Andrew is right behind Colin at the moment! Its going to be an exciting last 4 days! Yesterday’s quiz was a Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea). It feeds in shallow water, spearing fish, frogs, insects and small mammals. It will often wait motionless for prey, or slowly stalk its victim. It tends to keep within reedbeds more than the Grey Heron, and is often inconspicuous, despite its size. In the last 5 years I only saw it once in the Kalahari, and that was after a very wet season. Here is today’s quiz, good luck and see you on monday!
Good morning everyone… Well done ELSJE GRÄBE!! You sneaked in 1 minute before Colin! Yesterday’s quiz was a Wattled Starling, Creatophora cinerea. The non-breeding male has a feathered head except for a small yellow patch behind the eye. There are no wattles, but there is a black moustachial stripe. Good luck with today’s quiz, see you tomorrow!
Good afternoon everyone… Im back in the Kalahari after a long search for the desert lion in Namibia. Unfortunately no luck, but just as we were on our way back home (the kalahari!) we bumped into a Desert Black Rhino! My first one!!! It was a great feeling seeing one of these wonders of nature! Enjoy and see you tomorrow!
PS. Next week we will have our last Bird Quiz, so get ready!!!!
Good morning everyone… Just to let you know this will be my last blog for the next week, I’m quickly off to the Skeleton Coast to look for the Desert Lions for a week! It’s always healthy to have a change of scenery now and then! Noa will be looking after the fort and I’ll be in daily contact with her via satellite phone for updates on happenings in the kalahari! Enjoy and see you soon!
Here we have a hyena doing a bit of stretches!!
