Weekly update!

Good morning everyone! The rain continues and the bugs are more than ever! The stinkbugs taste just as bad as they smell! Uggh! The grass is getting longer and the kalahari is turning into a paradise! The Cats tail’s flowers are slowly making their appearance and the Devils thorn flowers are everywhere! Kali and Luna disapeared for a week with all the rains, but this morning they were back in the riverbed. Oscar has been scarce, probably flirting with another female. The Beach boys are very active in the Kij Kij area and they are your best bet to see lions in the southern region.

The Yellow-billed kites are in abundance and hunting termites in the air! Great to see these acrobats at work! Enjoy and see you soon!

Lazy Lazy Lazy!

Good afternoon everyone! Been stuck in Upington with car trouble, had to get a new transfer box for the Landy! OUCH! The Landy purrs again and hopefully wont give us problems any time soon! Anyway, life goes on in the Kalahari, and the days are hot and humid, cloud cover every afternoon with heavy thunder and rainstorms in the evening! The first and last hour of the day are very important, because after the sun hits the dunes, everything that moves head for the shade, including the tourists! We share with you today a lazy, but comfortable male lion, too lazy to go to the loo, and just letting go! Why? King of the jungle of course!

Cheers and see you soon!

Weekly update!

Good morning everyone, the kalahari is turning into a paradise! The grass is getting longer and the riverbeds are transforming into green fields with yellow flowers! Also thunder and lightning storms are frequent, almost every day in the late afternoon! The heat is unbearable at times, and if you in a tent like us, its a uncomfortable and sweaty affair!!!!

The bugs are increasing, especially at night. The storks & bustards are loving the grasshoppers, so is the Spotted Eagle Owls, as seen in the photograph below!!!!!! If u want to come to the kalahari for birding, beginning march is the best time!! Enjoy and see you soon!

Weekly update!

Good morning everyone, its been a very hot week, in the lower 40’s, but we also had some good rain, thunder and windstorms. The veld is turning beautifully green and there are millions of bugs! The devil’s Thorn flowers are blooming, and the kites are enjoying all the termites! On the animal front, Kali is growing up fast, and Luna have mated with Oscar again! Hopefully in 3 months we’ll have more cubs, lets keep our fingers crossed! The southern pride had a successful hunt in the Samevloeiing area and the Beach Boys from Kij Kij are mating all over the place! The one male from Kij Kij, as seen below has grown big sideburns, almost reminds us of Elvis! Anyway enjoy and see you soon!!!

First springbok kill!

Good morning everyone, we’ve been hard at work not leaving the leopard’s side for a moment! Kali has caught one of her first springbok, a fully grown ram!!! Incredible hunter at only 9 months!! Her mother joined her about 24 hrs later to join in the feast! And last, but not least, Oscar made his appearance a day later to feed of the scraps! Poor Oscar! It was nice to see the family together again! After all this excitement a lion chased them up a tree and Oscar ran away over the dunes!!! We’ll keep you posted as much we can, but unfortunately I do a lot of fieldwork at the moment and are running out of time most days, but we’ll keep you posted at least once a week!!! Enjoy and see you soon!

Heatwave!

Good morning everyone, we are back in the bush, and things are heating up! The last 24 hrs we had great sightings, the riverbeds are active and lots happening. The heatwave is to continue today and hopefully we will see some good rains soon. The Kalahari is very dry at the moment! After chasing a springbok and missing, this cheetah strolled up a dune to enjoy the sunset. Enjoy and see you tomorrow!

Merry Xmas & New Year!!!!!

Well done Anet van Staden & Elsje Grabe !!! Oscar, the father of Kali is nr. 2! This will be our last blog for 2011, and we hope everyone enjoyed the blog so far! Keep in touch & see you in 2012. We will be back online middle January. Have a merry Xmas & happy new year! We end of the year with a photo of our favourite lion in the Park, Mufasa, who disappeared about 9 months ago! Enjoy and see you next year! From me, Noa, Luna & Kali, cheers!

Who’s your daddy?

Good morning everyone! We decided to call the little one Kali! Short for kalahari! When she was little the colour of her eyes was the same as the red sand of the kalahari! Who can tell me who is the father? 1, 2 0r 3?

First we have Kali, then the 3 contestants! Enjoy and see you tomorrow!

Good afternoon everyone… Spend today with Luna’s cub and she is so funny to watch! Chasing everything that moves! Lizards, birds, ground-squirrel, mongoose! We’re off to spend more time with her, enjoy and see you tomorrow!

Leopard update!

Good morning everyone! At last we found Luna! With one cub! The little female survived and is looking beautiful. We spent the whole evening with her while mom was patrolling the area. In general, leopards are relative quiet animals. When necessary, though, they do make some sounds, or vocalizations, to communicate with leopards or other animals. When female leopards are ready to mate, they make rasping growls to attract males. And that is exactly what Luna made last night, she was either calling the missing cub or attracting males! The cub is almost 9 months old, and will leave the mother in about 4 months or so. Her previous cub left her at the age of 13 months! Enjoy and see you tomorrow! Here is a picture of the cub!
